Many of the different manifestations of God’s One, Holy and Universal Church have struggled openly in recent years with the very real and very complicated issue of human sexuality. Along with us Episcopalians, other Christian denominations, namely the Lutherans, Methodists, and Baptists have found that, for the good of their respective communities and the people we all seek to serve, the issue of human sexuality needs to be addressed with humility and compassion. The only thing we can be sure of in this struggle is that God is with us. The Episcopal Church has no obligation to claim for itself any stance or ground. We need only to leave our hearts open, to be present with each other, and to let God lead us. What seems most clear, however, is that the Church God is calling us to be a part of is open to every human being. Acknowledging the needs of humanity everywhere and God’s compassionate plea to us to help, the Episcopal Church is ready in the spirit of love and the hope of the Kingdom of God to receive the gifts and talents of all people.
